Is work/life balance possible?
For years we’ve all been feeling it. “I need to put the hours in to promote and have more out of my career. But does my family have to suffer at the same time?” What about time with friends?” “I need to work so my finances are in order now and in retirement, but when do I get to have fun?”
How many of you feel that way? I have for years and have always wondered how to really make it work.
A couple of years ago at my company convention this Oola book showed up. I didn’t pay much attention at the time, but when one of my friends went with me last year and went to the Oola class her passion made me want to know more.
What Is Oola?
Oola is “simply a life that is balanced and growing in all the key areas of health and well-being” according to the Oola Life website. The writers of the book say “Oola is not your typical self-help book. Oola is a state of awesomeness; it’s when your life is balanced and growing in the 7 key areas of life – Fitness, Finance, Family, Field, Faith, Friends, and Fun.”
When I bought the book I was skeptical that it would really help me or that it would be any better than any other self-help book I’d read before. But I have to say I was blown away. It was so raw and real that there were moments that brought up anger, sadness and other emotions. I truly could relate to not only the good but also the bad things that had happened to both of the authors. But what I really realized was that no one can balance their life without actually reviewing their life and making the commitment to change and strive for better.
There are many steps to Oola, but to me the most important ones are actually putting things down on paper. Writing out where you are and where you want to be. Seeing where you need to improve, especially in an area you may be neglecting because you figure “it will just work itself out” or thinking “if I ignore it then it will just go away.” I think we all know by now that is something we tell ourselves to feel better but it’s not reality.
Why Does Oola Matter?
Well, if you’re like me, you want everyone around you to be happy and healthy. You know that the secret to a fulfilled life is being productive but also having time for the things you love outside of work. The great thing about the Oola book is it walks you through the steps one at a time and helps you set up small everyday things you can do to reach your larger goals. It’s non-judgmental and very easy to read, follow and get your thoughts in writing.
I’ve started implementing Oola in my life, especially since Missy has started doing periodic Oola trainings for us. Is it easy? No! But has it helped? Immensely. The biggest take away for me has been that no one else can make me happy or give me what I really need in life. It’s up to me to find the fun in everything and to make myself happy. It’s also up to me to be a better family member if I want my family to be better too. It all starts and ends with me!
